On the fast track: Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project hits century mark

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, managed by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of 100 km of viaducts and 230 km of pier work. This progress includes the use of innovative construction techniques, such as the Full Span Launching Method (FSLM), where 40-meter long 'full span box girders' and 'segmental girders' are launched using state-of-the-art equipment.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the accomplishment on social media, emphasizing the completion of 100 km of viaducts and the construction of 251.40 km of pillars as of November 21, 2023. The viaducts also feature bridges over six rivers in Gujarat, enhancing the connectivity of the high-speed rail corridor.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, with an estimated cost of ₹1.08 lakh crore, has achieved various construction milestones, including the laying of the first Reinforced Concrete track bed using the Japanese Shinkansen system. Additionally, the breakthrough of the first mountain tunnel and the erection of the first steel bridge mark significant progress in the ambitious project. The corridor, launched in September 2017, is a collaborative effort with the central government contributing ₹10,000 crore and Gujarat and Maharashtra each providing ₹5,000 crore, while the remaining cost is covered by a low-interest loan from Japan.
